What a whirlwind the past month has been! Demolition begins
in four short days and I’m almost ready for the fun to begin. All design elements have been confirmed –
materials, patterns, colors, etc. Items have been ordered and – in some cases –
already received. Boxes of kitchen stuff have been staged in the guest house. Unfortunately,
the guest house kitchen is too small to be put to full use, so dedicated space
in the dining room will be set aside for my refrigerator and microwave to heat
up early morning breakfasts and weeknight meals. Right now, my only stress is
my worry about how the cats will handle the five weeks of commotion and
disruption to their tranquil daily routine.
Poor babies!
When I initially started envisioning a new kitchen space, I
saw colors and finishes that would fit with the rest of my home’s “beach
cottage” theme. That included sea glass, and other beach inspired colors.
However, I made a lot of changes as the dream started to become a reality. My
better sense kicked in, and I started picking colors and finishes that are more
neutral – but equally as beautiful – and still evocative of cottage living. In this picture, you see the colors I’ve selected as well as
the finishes. The wall color will be a
creamy yellow and the cabinets and trim will be a soft white. The countertop is called Staron by Samsung –
their entry into the solid stone market – in “Pebble Gold.” The backsplash is a khaki colored glass
subway tile and a beautiful mosaic tile will be placed behind the range and
serve as a “liner” throughout the rest of the backsplash. Finally, the flooring
will be walnut colored marmoleum (a “green” linoleum). My designer found a nice
pendant light and I purchased two. They will hang in front of the two windows
over the sink.
It’s hard to believe that about six weeks from now my
kitchen will be completely transformed and the hardwood floors throughout the
house refinished. I’m excited for the project to begin!
